Blueface: America’s Next Big Controversial Rapper

If you haven’t heard of Blueface by now, chances are you’re living under a rock. The rising Los Angeles-bred star has been going viral with pretty much anything he does. With his infamous “off-beat” flow, overly confident and contagious personality, and his face tattoo of Benjamen Franklin, he has been the hottest topic in hip hop the past couple months. His standout songs like “Thotiana”, “Dead Locs”, and “Respect My Crypin” and gained millions of views of what seems to be a rapid rate. You either love him or you hate him.
In the past, any artist who has ever done anything different from the current trends of hip hop usually tends to get a lot of hate. You can take it back to the roots of the genre starting with the controversy N.W.A. brought in the scheme of music with their anti-police lyrics during a time where hip hop wasn’t what everyone was listening to. Then there was Eminem who was the first white rapper to really make a name through his various drug references, fights with his mother, and throwing around the word “faggot” like it was nothing. Then taking it to the modern age of hip hop, you have artists like Soulja Boy, Tyler, The Creator, Kodak Black, Lil Pump, XXXTentacion, Lil Peep, and many more artists who brought a lot of controversy to the table from their personal backgrounds, upbringing, style, and the content they put out into the world simply because it’s different from what people have been comfortable listening to. But what they all have in common is that they weren’t afraid of putting themselves all the way out there and letting the world see them for who they really are, whether they love it or not. And any artist who has reached superstar status went away from current trends and started their own movement.
Blueface is no different, he’s unapologetically being himself and isn’t concerned with any of the hate he is receiving right now. He’s got a cult following who cherishes his aura like no artist I’ve seen before. I’ve seen videos where Blueface will just pull up to a random parking lot and hundreds, sometimes thousands of fans will meet him there where he stands on a fans car and proceeds to perform all of his songs for the crowd. A lot of the biggest artists in the game right now aren’t selling out shows and making the kind of noise that Blueface is making right now. He’s currently gotten co-signs from some of the biggest influencers in the game such as Drake, Lil Uzi Vert, ASAP Rocky, and even hip hop greats like Ice Cube. He has collabs with Drake, Quavo, and Lil Uzi Vert on the way.He even has a music video ready to be released with Cole Bennett/Lyrical Lemonade who is known for blowing up a lot of the rappers in the current realm of hip hop. There has been screenshots released of a conversation Blueface had with Drake about a future Drake x Blueface collab as well.

So why do people hate on Blueface so much? Is Blueface really “off-beat”? A lot of his competitors praise his flow and say he’s really just swinging and stretching his flows and lyrics over the beat and say that the beat is “off of his verse”. He’s only been rapping for a year and he’s already made more noise than really anyone this year.
Blueface is definitely an acquired taste, but once you get used to his delivery over his songs and you break down those mental barriers and pre-construed thoughts that you’ve made about him, you might find out that he’s very unique – and who knows, you might end up liking a song or two. All I know is, no matter if you hate on Blueface or not, 2019 is going to be a big year for the rising superstar. With all the collaborations he has on the way, there is no stopping the momentum he has built for himself going into the new year.
I’m going to leave some of my favorite Blueface songs and interviews here at the bottom for those who are interested in diving deeper into Blueface’s content!
